The transfer and pregnancy test results

So the embryo transfer was on April 2nd!
Wyatt went over to his Auntie's house for a couple of days.  This was so I could just lay on the couch so that little embryo could burrow in.  It's important to not do anything or stress out about anything at all during that first little while.
Here's a magnified view of the embryo before it was transferred.  It's already starting to hatch!
After the transfer Jared picked up some PF Changs for me to gorge on and he went off to work.
At first I was like, OMG SILENCE!!  This is amazing!  la la la la la I can do whatever I want.. as long as I don't get up.  That lasted for about an hour before I was like holycrapiamsofreakingboredoutofmymind and howdidisurvivelikethiswheniwasonbedrestfortenweeks?!
Being a mom has changed me.

When Wyatt came home I was all excited to see him and he didn't want anything to do with me.  I think he was made at me or something.  Sorry kid.  He warmed up the next day though.

So now I just had to wait 2 weeks for a pregnancy test.  Two whole weeks.  These two weeks always seem like the longest two weeks of my life.

During this time, Wyatt got a fungal infection in his diaper.  Oh the joys of Ichthyosis.  So he had a lot of naked time {which I was totally cool with because baby butts are the cutest}
He had naked time in the pool
Naked time playing running around the yard
Naked time helping daddy plant an avocado tree
The kid loved being naked
Naked time plus Clotrimazole really seemed to really help the infection clear up.  Yay!

Here's a couple of bath time pictures since those ones are always the best

I love his personality!

So 5 days after the transfer I was super anxious and cheated.  I took a pregnancy test.  Then I took another on Wednesday morning.  Then another on Friday.  Finally I went and got one of those yes/no pregnancy tests so that all of the guesswork was taken out and
I'm so flipping excited to be a mom again!!!  We do know the gender, but want to make sure the little bean decides to stick around before we share.  We'll reveal the gender around the end of May.

As of now, I am 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant.  We got our first peak at what was going on in me on Wednesday
It's still too early to see a heartbeat {It's not strong enough to pick up on an u/s yet} but the dr. was able to see a yolk sac and cardiovascular tissue.  Hooray!!!
The next appt is set for a week and a half from now. :)
My family is so blessed!

Wyatt's birth story

After years of TTC, one round of IVF, 26 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy, the loss of Michael {twin a}, and 9 weeks of bed rest...

Here is the birth story of Wyatt Reid Barney
Friday the 13th - I had been having back pain and cramps all day on Thursday that continued onto Friday, then when I woke up on Friday I started spotting a little. With the spotting in play, I realized that these were symptoms of preterm labor so my mom took me to L&D to get checked out. Better safe than sorry right? After I was hooked up to the monitoring equipment I learned that I was having contractions every 5 minutes, I just couldn't feel all of them. I had an fFN test done {Fetal fibronectin} which came back positive so I was admitted for overnight monitoring. This test is basically predicts whether or not you will go into labor within the next 3 weeks. If the test comes back positive you have a 15% chance that will happen. I received round one of steroids {to help with lung development in case he came early} at 1:00 and was put on a 24 hour magnesium sulfate drip {to help control contractions and it also helps babies brain development}. I was also given procardia to help control contractions. The remainder of Friday was pretty uneventful. My mom, Jared and I all just hung out and visited in my room.
Saturday, April 14th - My mom and I spent the morning visiting with each other. We made a list of things that need to be done before Wyatt comes and made a list of what needs to be put in my hospital bag and she also taught me some breathing techniques. Since I was having owey cramps, she told me that I could practice the breathing whenever I had a cramp so that when the time came that I went into labor I would just go on auto pilot and focus on breathing instead of freaking out. I have to admit that I was probably not very much fun to be around. The magnesium had some nasty side effects that left me feeling completely drugged up and depressed. I may or may not have vocally felt sorry for myself several times that morning. I received round 2 of steroids at 1:00 that afternoon and completed the magnesium sulfate drip. My mom and I talked about whether or not she should change her flight for her to leave a different day, but things looked like they were going very well and I was going to be discharged from the hospital the next day. I told her that I wasn't going to have Wyatt for 10 more weeks so it would be okay for her to get on her flight. She left at 2:30.
Jared came up to the hospital after dropping off mom and settled in for the night. He had spent the day chopping wood with his dad and BIL and was pretty wiped out. I was still having contractions and cramps and they seemed to be getting worse so I stared practicing my breathing and focusing on how long each of them lasted, which was anywhere from 30-45 seconds long. We watched a movie and tried going to sleep around 10 or 11 because Jared was so tired. I really wanted to fall asleep but I had to get up frequently to go to the bathroom, plus the cramps started happening about every 5 minutes. There were still only a few that were picking up as contractions on the monitor, so I tried not to think about it too much.
Sunday, April 15th - Just before 2 am I went to the bathroom for the zillionth time and when I checked the pee there was some blood in it. I had Jared call for my nurse and by the time she made it to the room I was dripping blood into the toilet. Lindsey immediately called the head nurse Linda and when Linda got there she took one look and ordered me to get back in bed immediately because "we're having a baby tonight". She checked to see if I had dilated because she was concerned that I was going to tear through my cerclage. I had just started dilating and calls were put in to my Dr. and an anesthesiologist in case I had to go in for an emergency c section. About 10 minutes and a couple of contractions later, Linda checked me again. This time I was dilated to an 8 or 9. She kind of freaked out and told me "DON'T PUSH AT ALL!" I was definitely tearing through my cerclage and was wheeled over to the operating room for an emergency c section within the next 5 minutes. I was moved onto the operating table and given spinal anesthesia while people were running all around getting things ready. Jared was scrubbed in and right before the procedure started they brought him in to sit next to me.
At 2:57 am the Dr. started to cut me open and it smelled pretty awful, {The tool that they use to cut he skin, cauterizes the skin as it cuts to decrease bleeding} so Jared had to leave the room for a minute. He found a rolly chair with a back on it and rolled back in the room just in time because at 3:02, a mere 5 minutes after the procedure began, Wyatt was born. I wasn't able to see him right away but I heard a couple of tiny cries come out of him and by the time they got him over to a table he had already peed. The NICU team was in the room and took over, intebating him and got him ready to move. After a few more minutes he was shown to me for just a second right before he was placed in the incubator and whisked away. Jared went with them.
By 3:30 the Dr finished sewing and stapling me up and I was brought out to recovery until the anesthesia wore off. Jared came back about 20 minutes later because they had to run tests on Wyatt and were in a sterile environment that he was not allowed to go in. The next little bit was spent waking up parents and siblings letting them know that Wyatt had made an early debut. We were brought to my room a little after 5 am and Jared immediately passed out asleep on the chair. I tried to sleep and drifted off here and there, but I was really anxious to see my little Wyatt. At 9 a nurse came in and taught me how to pump so that I could get started and FINALLY at 11 I was allowed to go and see my son.
My whole life I've always thought newborn babies weren't very cute. I've always joked that when I finally did have a baby I'd tell the Dr.
"AH!!!! Put it back!!!"
I know I'm probably a little biased, but I think that Wyatt is perfect. When I was wheeled over to the NICU and brought next to him, I sat net to the incubator and just thought to myself, he is THE most beautiful baby I have ever seen in my entire life.
Wyatt Reid Barney ~ 2 lbs 4 oz. 13.75 inches

The neonatologist informed us that Wyatt seemed to be doing very well. He had been intubated, but was breathing room air, and he was put under light therapy. These two things are pretty much standard for NICU babies. Other than those two things, there weren't any other traditional preemie concerns, however, Wyatt has a skin condition that they are very much concerned about. His skin was "sluffing off in sheets". Antibiotics were administered to him and blood was drawn to test for different infections. All blood tests came back negative for infection so the Dr. thinks that he might have Epidermolysis bullosa.
A call was put in to a dermatologist and after talking with another of the NICU Dr.'s, we were informed that it was a big possibility that Wyatt would need to be transferred to another hospital that had resources better able to diagnose and treat him. Also, because of his skin condition we are not allowed to touch him at all. His skin is so sensitive that any contact can make more skin rub off.

By 4 that afternoon, Wyatt no longer needed to be intubated, so the tube was removed and he started breathing room air completely on his own! A few hours after that he was taken off of light therapy and the shield protecting his eyes was able to be removed. He is definitely daddy's little boy. :) He has his daddy's blonde hair and blue eyes and his nose and his big 'ol forehead, haha. I don't really "feel" like a mom yet and that might be partly because we haven't been allowed to have any contact with him, but the love that I feel for this little person is indescribable.

Monday, April 16th - The neonatologist came in first thing in the morning and informed me that Wyatt did very well during the night, but that after a consult with another Dr., decided that Wyatt did in fact need to be moved to another hospital. Paperwork was filled out and a plan set in motion to get him transported over to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. I spent the entire morning by his side trying to soak up as much time with him as I possibly could before we would be separated. Transport from Children's showed up around 2:00 pm, 4 workers plus the transport driver, all for my little man. It took awhile for everything to be set up to move him, but at 3:00 the RN from Children's asked for me to be wheeled over by Wyatt so he could do a "fly by" for a kiss. Jared and I just looked at each other in complete shock I asked her, are you serious? I really get to kiss him?! To which she responded, of course! He's your son! She brought him in front of me and I kissed his forehead and so did Jared and then he was quickly put into the transport incubator. I tried to stay composed, but as soon as I looked at Jared and saw him crying I just lost it. We held each other as the final preparations were done and a few minutes later I had to say goodbye to my boys. Seeing Wyatt leave without me is probably the hardest thing that I've had to do so far with this entire pregnancy experience, but his daddy's with him and I know he's in good care.
Transport doesn't mess around. :)

Wyatt's new hospital
I spent the remainder of the day researching EB and pumping away since that is the only thing I can do for my son right now. And you know what? I feel pretty awesome because I'm the only person in the world that can do that for him. :)
The night ended with this picture from Jared.
Today, April 17th - My Dr. came in to see me this morning, and because of my circumstances, he is going to let me leave the hospital today. He would normally want to keep me another day or two, but he said that I'm doing very well and wants me to be able to be at the other hospital with Wyatt as soon as I can. The hospital is currently working on getting me discharged and I should be out of here in just a few short hours.
I can't wait to see my boys!!!!!

1 hour glucose = fail

BOO!!!!
I got the results from my glucose screening and I scored too high :(  Apparently you have to score between 60-99 and my results came back at 142.  Poop.  So tomorrow I have to go have the 3 hour test done.  It's a good thing that needles don't super bother me because for those of you who aren't aware, this is the process of this really fun test.
1. Go to a lab
2. Get blood drawn.
3. Drink really nasty super sweet drink.
4. Wait forever then after 1 hour get blood drawn.
5. Wait forever then after another hour get blood drawn.
6. Wait forever then after another hour get blood drawn.
7. You finally get to go home.
Aren't I so lucky?  I get to have my blood drawn not once, not twice, but four times tomorrow morning.
My dr. said that he thinks I'll pass this one just fine and I'm crossing my fingers that he didn't jinx me just by thinking that.

I have had SO much fun having my mom here with me!  Right now I most definitely feel like her favorite daughter ;)  She has bought me some maternity clothes, we bought some clothes for Wyatt, she's made every single meal since she's been here, she weeded my entire yard and tomorrow she's planting the garden for me {YAY!!!!}, she and I went through all the baby clothes my SIL gave me a few years ago and she washed, sorted and put them all away... and she was the Easter Bunny :)  We ate way too much chocolate yesterday!  We've also had a lot of down time to visit and enjoy one anothers company.  I'm glad I still get to have her until Saturday, but I think Saturday is just coming way too soon.

I had a GREAT dr.'s appt today.  It was so good that it deserves all caps :)  Really.
Wyatt's AFI measured 14.2,  my CL measured 3.7 {which is .3 more than last week!} and she unofficially measured Wyatt and he is approximately 2.5 lbs.  Yay!
Dr. R told me that she spoke with her colleagues about me and my situation again and the plan as of now is this:
I will be on bed rest until 34 weeks at which point I will be allowed to resume my every day activities again.  The cerclage will be removed at 37 weeks AND they will allow me to go full term!!!  As long as things keep looking good I will NOT have to be induced early!  I love love love this news!
And the icing on the cake, she gave me permission to go see The Hunger Games!  So we're going tomorrow night when Jared gets off of work.  Yay!

Tomorrow I have an appt with my OB and I will find out the results to my gestational diabetes test.  I missed a call from them today and I didn't see it until the office was closed so now I'm worried that I failed it.  But I'm just not going to think about it until I go in tomorrow and find out for sure.

Here's what's going on with Wyatt this week...
  • His eyes are forming, and his eyes will soon start to open.
  • And his eyelashes are now grown, too.
  • He's getting his immune system ready for life on the outside by soaking up your antibodies.
  • He's taking breaths, too. They're of amniotic fluid, not air, but it's still good practice.

25 Weeks

I was 25 weeks on Monday!
If Wyatt decided to come this week his chances for survival would be 50-80%.

How far along? 25w2d
Total weight gain/loss: gained 13 lbs
Maternity clothes: Yes
Stretch marks: a few
Best moment this wk: My mom came in town! :)
Miss anything: I miss living around by my parents
Movement: Lots
  Food cravings: Strawberries
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nope
Symptoms: Braxton hicks and some round ligament pain
Have you started to show yet:Yes
Gender: Boy
Labor signs: Nope
Belly Button in or out: In
Wedding rings on or off: Off
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy
Looking forward to: The results to my gestational diabetes screening

Last week we got one of the fitted sheet for Wyatt's crib and it's soooo cute!
I love the little elephants!

I also bought his first set of blocks... yes I know it's a little early for the 'toys' but I found them on PBK and fell in love.  Then I found them on ebay for a deal I couldn't pass up :)  I should get them in the mail this week.

My mom flew in on Saturday!!! We hung out and visited on Sat and Sun.  Monday I had an appt with my peri for my p17 shot and an AFI u/s.  My cervix measured 3.4 so it's about .5 shorter than it was at my last measurement 2 weeks ago.  Dr. R says we're in the clear as long as it's longer than 2.5.  Wyatt's AFI measured 15.2 which is a great number.
Since Dr. R's office is right next to the mall, we stopped in really quick so I could get some clothes that actually fit me.  Since I've been stuck in the house, I'm quickly growing out of all of my clothes that used to fit me and I've had to resort to jammy pants and t-shirts 24/7.  Yeah, I'm attractive.  My mom wheeled me around to a couple of stores and then we headed back home with some new maternity clothes for me (yay!) and some cute regular people size clothes for her... and maybe these for Wyatt...
Tuesday I had the one hour gestational diabetes screening.  You have to be fasting for this test so I was really hungry by the time I was done.  I think I should have those results back by the end of the week.  The medical building just happened to be right next to the mall so we may or may not have stopped there again.  We had lunch at Cheesecake Factory and it was soooo nice to eat out at a restaurant!  (But it was also nice to be able to eat since I was starving!)   We stopped into Motherhood Maternity bc I was in desperate need of some maternity bras of which I am now the proud owner.  They are SO much more comfortable than regular bras are right now!  Anyway, I kind of got a lecture from Jared about being out too much (even though I was in my wheelchair) so it's back to the couch again for the rest of the week.
7.5 weeks down with 8.5-10.5 to go :)

This week Wyatt is the size of an eggplant
During month six, the average fetus measures about 13.6 inches to 14.8 inches and weighs about 1.5 to 2.5 pounds.
  • He's enjoying her new sense of equilibrium -- she now knows which way is up and which is down.
  • He's growing more fat and more hair too!

We made it to 24 weeks!!!
Goal date #1 has been reached and if Wyatt was born now, his chances for survival would be 40-70%.

Maternity clothes: Yes
Stretch marks: a few

Labor signs: Nope
Belly Button in or out: In
Wedding rings on or off: Off
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy
Looking forward to: My mom flies in on Saturday!!!

Soooooo... this last week I had to miss a big family event. :(
My BIL Frankie married his awesome fiance Kristy on Saturday.  I was soooo bummed that I wasn't able to go!!!  The things we sacrifice for our children... haha.  But I'm really excited for them.  They are perfect for each other and their families seem to mesh really well.
While Jared was gone the RS was awesome enough to arrange meals to be brought to me, so I constantly had people in and out of my house.  The only time I really had to feel lonely was when I had to sleep in my big bed all by myself.

My dr.'s appts this week were uneventful.  My Peri's office was "closed" but there was still someone there to give me my p17 shot.  So I didn't get an u/s, boo.  And my OB didn't do an u/s either, but we got to hear Wyatt's heartbeat and my belly was measured.  24 cm on the dot.  Since I'm 24 weeks I'm measuring exactly on track, yay!  I think I might be a little bit of an u/s brat.  I'm used to getting 1-2 every week to make sure Wyatt's okay and to check the amniotic fluid level.  Plus I love seeing my little beansprout, so it was weird to not be able to see him this week.  If my next pregnancy is a "normal" one, then it's going to be hard only getting 2-3 u/s for the entire pregnancy!  I've had at least 17 so far.

Anyway, here's what's going on with Wyatt this week
Your 10.5-to-11.8-inch fetus weighs about 12.7 to 20.8 ounces and every week he gets closer and closer to being ready to survive (and thrive!) in the outside world.
  • His see-through skin is gradually becoming more opaque.
  • And he's got a new pink glow, thanks to the small capillaries that have recently formed.

23 Weeks

I'm still pregnant!  And just ONE week until viability!!!
It's funny how the things you look forward to change so much once you've been put on bed rest. {Those who have had the "pleasure" of experiencing bed rest know what I'm talking about}

How far along? 23 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: gained 8.5 lbs
Maternity clothes: Yes
Stretch marks: a few tinies
Best moment this wk: The crib and dresser/changing table was delivered on Saturday!
Miss anything: I miss being able to do normal things
Movement: tons! :)
  Food cravings: otter pops :)
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nope
Have you started to show yet:Yes
Gender: boy
Labor signs: Nope
Belly Button in or out: In
Wedding rings on or off: I have decided to remove my beloved wedding ring.  It was starting to get tight and I'm terrified of it getting stuck on my finger and having to get it cut off.  So my anniversary ring is now gracing my left ring finger.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy
Looking forward to: Hitting my first goal... making 24 weeks!

I've got 5 weeks of bed rest down!
This last week Bruce, my shark died, so Jared bought me 3 more Bruces to help cheer me up.  It worked.
Wednesday marked 1 month since we lost Michael.  I can't believe it's only been a month.
The nursery furniture arrived on Saturday.  I LOVE how it looks and when I told Wyatt it was here he started kicking.  I told him he couldn't have it for at least 13 weeks.

We're in the process of ordering the mattress, bedsheets, rug and rocking chair and I LOVE THEM ALL!!!  Pottery Barn Kids seriously has some of the most adorable things ever.

Today was spent on the phone with my insurance company.  My preauthorization to see Dr. R hadn't been approved yet and I had an appt. at 2:30.  Well, the ins. co.'s system was down all the way until 1:50.  That's when they told me that I actually needed to call a different number.  SERIOUSLY???  So I called my group on the way to my doctors appt.  I had to go whether I was going to get the appt. approved or not because I had to get my progesterone injection.  Insurance won't cover that for me so I just pay $25 every time I go so I can get it.  I figured if I couldn't have the ultrasound, I would at least get the injection.  By the time I made it over to my appt.  I learned that the guy that authorizes things was looking at my file but that he needed more info before he could approve anything and that it could take up to a few more days.  :(
At this point, I'm pretty stressed out.  I think I'd cried about 5x throughout the day from the stress of everything and I just wanted to lay down and go to sleep.
The nurse at the office told me that if I wanted to see the dr. in addition to my shot that I was going to have to be treated as a cash paying customer and the appt. was going to cost $330.  I may or may not have shed some more tears at this point.  She left to go ask the dr. something and didn't come back for like 10 min.  When she came back she told me that Dr. R said she would do a quick ultrasound and wouldn't charge me for it.  It was like the Heavens had opened.  Everything was going to be okay.
The office was very busy today so I wasn't seen until about an hour after I arrived.  By the time I was called back, Dr. R herself had called my insurance company, explained my situation and the importance of all my visits being covered and managed to not only get all the rest of my visits covered, but they are going to start covering the progesterone injections as well.  How cool is that?!  My dr. is freaking awesome.

So Wyatt is looking amazing.  His AFI is 17.2 and he weighs approximately 1 lb. 7 oz.  Grow baby grow!  He's doing so awesome!  My cervix measures 3.85 and the cerclage is holding great.  His HR was in the 140's, his brain is developing nicely, and.... he was totally picking his nose, haha.  Just kidding, his hand was up by his nose so Dr. R joked that he was picking it.

Our little man is so cute!!! <3

This is my basic plan for the remainder of the pregnancy.  Obviously, we're going to keep taking things week by week and continue with the progesterone injections and weekly checkups.  I will take my last progesterone injection at week 34.  Dr. R is still trying to decide exactly what to do, but as of now she is looking at 2 different options at this point.
Option 1:  Because I am high risk and according to all things shouldn't even still be pregnant right now, her associates feel that I should have the cerclage removed and labor induced at 34 weeks.
She's not quite so sure.  She feels that if everything is going okay, then why push it?  If baby wants to stay in, let baby stay in a little longer.  Babies born between 34-37 weeks often show delayed development and she would like to make it past that.  So she's considering
Option 2:  Removing the cerclage at 36 weeks and allowing my body to go into labor naturally.

At this point Jared and I are definitely favoring option 2.  We'd like Wyatt to be able to bake as long as possible to he can spend very little or no time in the NICU.  However, Dr. R wants to look at all options and said that she could be swayed to go with option 1 if there is a high risk at letting me go longer.  The placenta left from Michael is still in my uterus and they don't have a way of knowing if it's doing any damage in there.
Anyway, those are the options that she's considering at this point and only time will be able to tell us the direction we need to go.

When I got home from my appt. I had this waiting in the mail for me
I know, try not to be too jealous.

Okay so this was long.  I'll wrap up with what's going on with Wyatt this week. :)
He is the size of a pomegranate
  • He's forming little nipples (yeah, really!)
  • His face is fully formed now -- he just needs a little extra fat to fill it out.
  • He's listening to your voice and your heartbeat -- and even to loud sounds like cars honking and dogs barking.

22 Weeks

22 weeks today, 4 weeks of bedrest down, 2 weeks until viability :)

At my appt today, the amniotic fluid had an AFI of 12.4.
CL {cervical length} is 3.9, yay!
Cerclage is holding perfectly.
Dr. R said she will measure Wyatt next week to see how he's growing.

Here he is! :)

Looking forward to: The nursery furniture is going to arrive on Saturday!

This past week was pretty uneventful.  It was my first week without someone staying with me all day and it actually went really well.  The RS arranged for someone to bring me lunch every day and it was fun to visit with and get to know those ladies a little better.  My dad sent me a few packages to help make things easier slash pass the time. :)  A table {kind of like the tables in the hospital}, a reacher, and Spanish levels 1, 2, and 3 so that I can {re}learn Spanish.  I have my hobby for the next 3 months!  Thanks dad!
We started eating the frozen dinners that my mom made for us and they are YUMMY!  My mom is seriously the bomb.com for making all of those for us.  And it helps Jared out a lot.  Speaking of Jared... he's continued on his path of awesomeness.  Not only does he work his full time job, he makes all my meals, he makes sure I have whatever I need during the day, he does the laundry, washes the dishes and keeps the house clean, on top of helping me with whatever miscellaneous thing I need.  I'm pretty sure I married as close to perfect as you can get. :)

Okay, I'll stop bragging about my awesome husband now...  Here's what's going on with Wyatt this week.

Baby is as big as a papaya
Watch what you say -- baby is now able to hear outside noise from down in the womb. Studies show that baby finds gentle music and your own voice most soothing. Nipples are starting to sprout, and that little face is fully formed. And, baby's starting to settle into sleep cycles, snoozing about 12 to 14 hours a day. It shouldn't be hard to figure out when -- just pay attention to those kicks as they start and stop.

Baby kicks

It's official.
I can feel my baby boy's tiny little kicks. :)
I started feeling the little taps on Monday night, but I didn't want to get too overly excited in case it was just bubbles.  But this is definitely different than anything I have felt before.

As the week has gone by the kicks have gradually gotten a little stronger.  In fact, when Jared walked in the door tonight he called out for me and Wyatt kicked in response.  I don't know if it was just convenient timing or if he can already recognize his daddys voice.  I told Jared that I thought maybe Wyatt recognized him and so he came over and put his hand on my tummy to which Wyatt promptly kicked back at, hard.  Well, hard for a 21.5 week old fetus, lol.

I'm soooo so so glad to finally be able to feel my baby boy.  Every time I feel him, it reassures me that he's still in there growing strong.  And every time I feel him, it's a reminder as to why I am doing this.  Bed rest is so worth it if it can get this baby safely here!

Reflections

Today officially marks five months complete of me being pregnant.
I've been feeling very humbled lately by this past months events.  I've also reflected a lot on my entire pregnancy journey...

my whole life all I've wanted was to be a mom.  I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I even had it all planned out when I was a teenager and recorded said plans in my journal.
I was going to be married by the time I was 21. {check} I was going to marry a doctor {negetive} and he was going to have brown hair and brown eyes {My hubby has blond hair and blue/green eyes}.  We were going to first have a daughter and we would name her Summer Lily, then twin boys, and they would be called Michael Andrew and Bryan Isaac.  THEN we were going to adopt a little Russian girl and give her the name of Katya.  According to my 'plans' this was all going to happen by the time I was 25.
Well... year 25 came around for me and I wasn't even close to being pregnant.  Shortly before I turned 25 is when I learned I would only become pregnant through IVF.
The next year was spent mentally and physically preparing myself for it.

Because of some family things, I changed jobs and started working for the business my in-laws own.  I lost some weight.  We financially prepared ourselves the best we could, and I spent a lot of much needed time with my husband.  I took more time off that year than I had in probably the last 3 years combined and I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Looking back on the IVF process, it really wasn't that bad.  But maybe I'm just having some convenient memory loss.  I had to take more of the injections than the avg. person because my body wasn't cooperating at first, but then my tests started showing good numbers.  I'll never forget the 3 most important dates of my IVF journey.

Oct 24th was the egg retrieval.  The doctor was able to get 13 eggs from my one ovary.
Oct 27th was embryo transfer day.  I was told that I had 8 viable embryos.  8!  The dr. transferred 2 of them to my body and then I had to play the waiting game for almost 2 weeks.
Finally on Nov. 8th, my 26th birthday, I went it for a pregnancy test and it was confirmed that I was pregnant.  It was definitely the best birthday to date.

November 23rd was my first ultrasound and the day that we received news that we were going to be having twins.  I don't know if there is a person in the world that was more overjoyed than Jared and I at that moment.

Everything about my pregnancy was great from that point on.  I 'graduated' early from HRC, and every test and ultrasound I had came back with great results.

When my water broke on Feb 11th I felt like my world had been turned upside down.  There was no rhyme or reason for it.  No explanation.  Losing our son 3 days later was probably the hardest thing that I've had to endure in this life.  I honestly couldn't have done it without Jared, my family, and my religion.  I'm a Mormon, and my religion teaches, and I believe, that a family is forever.  I know that Jared and I will be able to raise Michael in this next life.  It makes me sad that I won't be able to hold him in my arms or see him grow into a young man... but I know he is in a better place.  Heavenly Father is taking care of our little boy right now, and I believe they are both watching over and protecting Wyatt.

I'm told that tragedies like this can either strengthen or destroy relationships.  I'm happy to say that Jared and I have never been closer.

I'm humbled by the knowledge that Wyatt is beating the odds.  I'm grateful to have a dr. that has experience in high risk pregnancies.  And I'm both grateful and humbled by the support that I have received from family, friends, and complete strangers.

I have had more people reach out to me and offer support than I could ever fathom.  Their kind messages and words of support help me more than words can say.  So thank you.  Thank you for supporting me, a family member, friend and stranger, in my time of need.

The road ahead is still long and it's hard to see the end, but I know it's there.

21 weeks

3 weeks of bedrest down... 19 to go.
Baby Wyatt sucking his thumb <3

How far along? 21 weeks
Total weight gain/loss: gained 5 lbs
Maternity clothes: Yes
Stretch marks: Nope
Best moment this wk: the funeral home was finally able to finish up all the legal stuff in order to cremate Michael.  We got to bring him home on Saturday.
Miss anything: baby Michael
Movement: I found out I have an anterior placenta which explains why I haven't really felt Wyatt move.  Hopefully I'll get to start feeling him in a few weeks.
  Food cravings: otter pops :)
Anything making you queasy or sick: Nope
Have you started to show yet: YES
Gender: boy
Labor signs: Nope
Belly Button in or out: In
Wedding rings on or off: On
Happy or Moody most of the time: I'm happy most of the time, but I def have my moments
Looking forward to: Being able to really feel Wyatt move, and for Jared to feel him too

At my appt. today, Wyatt is still doing great :)  His amniotic fluid level is right on target and my cervix still looks good.  Dr. R was surprised that I couldn't really feel him kicking yet because he was kicking pretty hard.  Boooo anterior placenta!  I want to feel his little feet already!  Dr. R didn't measure Wyatt today since she measured him last week.  She said that she only wants to measure him once a month because we would just drive ourselves crazy measuring him every week.  She said it's like weighing yourself everyday.

Last week my SIL Wendy came down from Gilroy to help me out. :)  She was super awesome and made me food when I needed it and cleaned my house and did the laundry and took me to my dr.'s appointments.  When Dr. R found out that Wendy is from Gilroy, the "garlic capital" she told us that when she was younger she went there with a few of her friends.  They wanted to bring something back for their boyfriends, so they pulled over to the side of the road and picked up a clove of garlic to bring back.  All of the sudden they were surrounded by police cars and were almost arrested.  Apparently it's a federal offense to take anything off of a farm.  She said that technically, the garlic was on the side of the road, it was not in the field so she wasn't trying to steal anything.  The police let them go and she hasn't tried anything as daring ever since, lol.  I love that dr. :)
Anyway, it was really good to have Wendy out here for a week.  She and I haven't really had the opportunity to get to know eachother since I've been in the family so it was a lot of fun to visit with her and get to know her.

Here's what's going on with Wyatt this week
Baby gulps down several ounces of amniotic fluid every day, both for hydration and nutrition and to practice swallowing and digesting. And, these days, those taste buds actually work! Studies show that after birth, babies are most interested in tastes they've already experienced through amniotic fluid. Meaning, think about what you want your future child to eat as you prepare your own lunch.

Happy or Moody most of the time: I think I stay happy most of the time
Looking forward to: many many more weeks of good appointements

I had my 20 week checkup today with the perinatologist.  First they checked my vitals, which were great.  Then I got a progesterone injection.  There have been studies done that have proved that progesterone injections after a miscarriage actually help prevent future miscarriages, so bring on the injections :)  I'll be getting one every Monday.  After the injection Dr. R did an ultrasound.  Wyatt is sitting in a good amount of fluid, I don't remember the exact measurement but it was 12 point something.  He's measuring about 13 oz., has a strong heartbeat, and his brain is developing just as it should.  She also looked at my cervix.  It is not funneling at all and the cerclage is holding great!  I got all good news today and that's how I like it. :)  Hearing the good news makes bedrest worth it!

The only news I got that I didn't like was when I asked for a bit of clarification on my bedrest restrictions.  I asked her if I was allowed to drive myself to my own dr. appts {My SIL Wendy drove me today}, and she told me that I really need to have someone take me.  She doesn't want me driving myself anywhere.  Poop!  I was really hoping I would at least have THAT freedom.  Oh well. :p  At least all the other news I got was good :)

 Here's Wyatt!
{he wasn't being very cooperative so this isn't such a great shot}

The first week back home

First I just want to say... AT HOME BEST REST IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN HOSPITAL BED REST!!!!!!!!!  It has been soooo good to be home this week.  My mom came out for the week :)  and Jared's been working like crazy to try and catch up with all the time he took off to spend at the hospital last week so it's been sooooooooooo nice that I've had her here.  She's not only kept me company but she voluntarily made a ton of freezer dinners - like 2 months worth {I bet the R.S. loves that, lol}, she weeded my flowers, cleaned my house, did laundry, painted the nursery, took me for a walk in my wheelchair... she's been freaking awesome.

She left yesterday.  It was too soon. :(  It was kind of weird actually.... it's like, my mom being here with me made everything seem okay.  Because parents are the ones who always make things better right?  And then she wasn't here anymore and I felt vulnerable... so I cried.  A lot.  I realized that I wasn't going to have her here to take care of me and make sure everything was perfect.  I think that maybe the reality of everything started to set in or something... I don't know.  But she said she's going to come back in a month or so :)  I can't wait!

My SIL Wendy is coming out tonight and she's going to help me until Friday.  I think it's awesome that I have and married into such amazing families.  I love that they are here for whoever needs them whenever they are needed.

I have 2 weeks of bedrest (BR) down... 20 weeks to go.  I've heard that the first 3-4 weeks of BR are the hardest, and then you fall into a routine and it's not AS bad.  My first 10 days of BR was in the hospital and the past 5 days have been at home.  These past 2 weeks feel like they've gone really fast, but I think that's because there has been so much going on.  It'll be interesting to see how things go when I'm home by myself.

So far my days have been spent laying in bed or laying on the couch.  I've sat on the couch and I've sat at the kitchen table.  My legs feel weird because I haven't been able to use them like I used to.  I'm just really glad that Jared got a chair for the tub so that I can take long showers as opposed to a quick 5 minute one.  I've been on babycenter.com a lot.  There is a group that I joined on there for moms on BR.  It's nice to read the different suggestions on types of food to eat and things to do to help the time pass by.  It's really important that I eat healthy since I don't get to move around.  It's hard to not gain a million pounds when you're on BR.  I've actually lost 5 lbs. since I last weighed myself 3 weeks ago, but under the circumstances it makes sense.

Lastly, I just wanted to say that children are amazing.  I have friends who's children pray for baby Wyatt every night.  It's tender that the children think to pray for him.  My niece Ashley asked about the babies this morning.  She came over and saw the nursery and then asked where the other baby was going to stay.  So I told her that he was in Heaven because Heavenly Father needed him more than I did.  She thought that was funny.  Her mom had told her and her brothers that one of the babies had come too early.  I don't think she fully understood that meant that he had died, but her innocence and curiosity about the whole situation was sweet.  Her and her brothers wanted to know when Wyatt was going to be here and why couldn't he come out of my belly yet.  I love kids :)  They are very excited to meet their new cousin, but they are just going to have to wait 20 more weeks! lol

There is no title that fits...

Starting February 11th, Jared and I experienced one of the worst weeks of our lives... the following is a timeline of the series of events.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 - Day One
9:03 I was going to the bathroom when my water broke.  I just knew it because it was such a large amount of fluid and there was blood in it. :(  I immediately called Jared and told him to get home NOW (he was taking out the recycling).  I called my dr.'s answering service and they got a dr. on the phone.  I explained what had happened and she said it sounded like a hemorrhoid or that my water had broken but that I needed to go to the hospital.

9:40 We arrived at the emergency room and waited to be called back.

10:00 We're finally called back {it's amazing how long 20 min can feel}.  The nurse asked me a million questions and I was then told that my dr. wanted me transferred over to L&D {labor and delivery} which of course freaked me out.  I hated the sound of that place because in my mind if I went there, it meant everything was over.  L&D was completely full so they transferred me to the floor just above L&D {where all the new mom's with their new babies stay}.

2:00 I was brought to radiology where Skye the ultrasound tech. did an u/s on my belly.  She had a hard time seeing baby "A" on the screen and wasn't able to get very many measurements.  "A"'s heart rate was 120 and looked to be sleeping soundly.  Baby "B" was very easy to see and she was able to get measurements of everything that she needed too.  "B" woke up during the u/s and started wiggling around.  Heart rate was 160.

3:00 I was taken directly from radiology to L&D.  Dr. Grady did a cervical exam to see if I was dilated.  His prognosis - My cervix was dilated 2".  He told me that the radiologist had reviewed the u/s and said that baby "A"'s fluid level was very low.  Based on those two things, Dr. Grady gave me 1-24 hours before my body would go into labor and I delivered the babies.  He said that in almost every case with twins, when one baby delivers the other follows, so there really isn't anything we could do for baby "B".  He left Jared and I alone for a few minutes to digest what we were just told and as soon as the door closed Jared and I both just broke.  Jared's not a crier, and this man, my big strong mr. sasquatch husband, layed his head on me and sobbed in my arms.  No parent wants to receive news like this and there wasn't a thing we could do about it.  We just had to sit back and wait.
The dr. came back after a few minutes later and gave us the only two options we had.  Either we could let nature take its course and he would send me back up to my room to wait for everything to start, or he could speed things along and induce labor.  We did what I think any parent would do.  We chose to let nature take its course.  It's the only thing we could think of that would give baby "B"... our little Wyatt, a chance.  The dr.'s concern was that since my water was broken and I was dilated, I was at risk for infection... but I didn't care.  I figured I was in the hospital and that they would monitor me closely enough that it would be fine.  We went back to the room and spent the night there.

Sunday, February 12, 2012 - Day 2
Morning - Dr. Grady checked in on me.  I report that I hadn't had any contractions or cramps so far.  He reiterates my two options & that it's really only a matter of time before I'm going to deliver these babies.  Of course we stick to our guns.  No way was I going to be induced and just give up on our babies.

Afternoon - Dr. Grady checked in again - still no cramps/contractions to report.  He asked if I would like another cervical inspection to see if I've dilated any more.  I declined.  Every inspection that is done could increase my risk for infection.  Before bed, Jared gave me a sponge bath and washed my hair.  It felt soooo good to be clean again!

Monday, February 13, 2012 - Day 3
Morning - Jared had to go to work :(  He and I don't want to be apart for fear of something happening while he was gone, so we said a prayer.  After, we both felt that nothing bad would happen while Jared was gone and I told him it was okay for him to leave.
Dr. checked in again.  Still no labor signs.  He admitted that he was surprised that I hadn't experienced anything and told me that he needed to do another exam.  After exam he told me that I was dilated to a 4 and that he could feel the feet of baby "A" through the cervix.  Because I've made it this far he decided to involve a perinatologist by the name of Dr. Rodriguez.  She specializes in premature things like this and he felt more comfortable involving her because of her experience.
Dr. Rodriguez came in mid morning and told me that before we talked about anything she wanted to do an ultrasound on me.  The ultrasound showed baby "B" doing very well.  He was sitting in lots of fluid and had a good heartbeat and was moving around.  Then she got to baby "A".  She said that there was no fluid around the baby, that the baby was collapsing in on itself and had no heartbeat... that baby "A" was not alive.  This news unfortunately did not surprise me.  People talk about a mothers intuition... and how sometime mothers just "know"...  I knew that my little angel had left me and I had prepared myself to hear it.
Dr. R also told me that my cervix looked like it was actually closed.  She brought me downstairs and did a cervical exam that agreed with the u/s.  My cervix was not dilated.  So we made a game plan.  If I went into labor and delivered baby "A".  She would do amniocentesis on baby "B" to make sure there was no infection in the amniotic fluid and if there was not, then I would have a cerclage. {My cervix would be sutured closed} If I did NOT go into labor, then after a few days they would reevaluate the situation, but she did not want to do a cerclage with baby "A" sitting right on top of my cervix.  So I was sent back up to my room to wait some more.

Afternoon - Hospital billing brought me a letter that stated insurance was going to cover my stay 100%.  This is a HUGE blessing.  Dr. G checked in.  Dr. R had given him her report and he agreed it is a good idea.  Still no labor signs to report.  He's still convinced that I will go into labor very soon.

Tuesday, Feburary 14, 2012 - Day 4
Morning - Baby "A" decided to make an entrance.  I did not have any cramping or contractions.  "A" just started to sort of... fall out.  When I discovered "A" I yelled at Jared to call a nurse and then my body went into shock and I started shaking uncontrollably which, unfortunately started mild contractions.  The nurses called Dr. G who directed the nurses to try and pull out the baby and to give me a terb shot {medicine that relaxes the pelvis and makes contractions go away}.  They couldn't get the baby out because "A"'s head was on the other side of my cervix, so after several attempts my two diff. L&D nurses, Dr. G said to wait until he arrived.  A catheter was put in and I was ordered to stay in bed.  When he got there he tried to pull "A" out once, repositioned my hips, had my push a little, and baby came out easily on the first push.  We then learned that baby "A" was not a little girl, but a boy.  A nurse cleaned him up a little bit and Jared and I were left alone for a few minutes.  We decided to call our little man Michael, after the archangel and Warren after his daddy.  Michael Warren Barney.  A perfect name for our perfect angel.  Michael was then taken to be cleaned up a little and weighed and measured for hospital records.  While he was gone, Dr. R came in to do amniocentesis.  {Which hurts like crap by the way.. idk why anyone would voluntarily do this}  Wyatt still looked good.  The mild contractions hadn't compromised his sac at all.  All that was left to do at this point was wait again.  There were 4 tests to do on the fluid.  2 of the results would be in later that day, the other 2 results would take 3 days to get back.  I was started on an antibiotic, given medicine to control contractions AND was given compression socks so I didn't get any blood clots in my legs.
Jared and I spent the rest of that morning with only each other and talked and talked and talked.  We decided that we would have Michael cremated.

Afternoon/Evening - We received news that the first 2 tests had come back negative - meaning no infection.  Dr G went out of town on a vacation that he had planned prior to any of this happening and he put Dr. R in charge.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 - Day 5
Morning - Because I was under such close observation and we had to wait a couple for days for the other test results, Jared went in to work.  Around 10:45 I received a call from Dr. R.  After 24 hours of observation on the culture and sensitivity test, nothing had even sort of started to happen and so she felt comfortable saying that there was absolutely no infection.  She wanted to schedule the cerclage for that evening.  I called Jared and he came right back to the hospital.  Dr. R called in a favor to Dr. Morrison to do the cerclage.  When she told me this, I felt a wave of comfort and peace wash over me.  Dr. Morrison was the dr that I had originally wanted for my OBGYN.  However, when I tried to make an appt. with his office, I was told that he had retired and was no longer accepting new patients.  About 3 weeks ago, he came out of retirement and started working again because he got bored with all of his newly found free time.  Dr. R said that Dr. M was the best she knew of to do this procedure and that he had agreed to do it.

Afternoon/Evening - I've been at the hospital for 96 hours so a new IV is put in.  I got another sponge bath {YAY!!!} and went for the procedure at 5:00.  They did spinal anesthesia {since general is not safe for pregnant women} and had to do it twice because it failed to work the first time.  Not. Fun.  The procedure went very well and it only took about 10 minutes once everything was ready.  Shortly after, I was brought to L&D for overnight observation.   They strapped a sensor around my belly that could sense if I was having even the tiniest contraction.  It was pretty cool.

Thursday, February 16, 2012 - Day 6
Morning - Only a couple of contractions overnight and the last one was at 4:10 am.  Dr. R came in to do an u/s.  Wyatt looked great and was swimming around in 14.2 ml of fluid.  This is amazing news! Then Dr. M checked in on me and since everything looked great, he had the catheter removed, gave me my bathroom privileges back and moved me back to my old room one floor up.  Possible release date is set for Monday.

Evening - Jared and I celebrated Valentines Day.  He gave me pink Gerber daisies and a little Willow Tree family.  A husband and wife, and set of twin boys.  It was the perfect gift.

Friday, February 17, 2012 - Day 7
Jared and I decided on a funeral home.
Dr. R went out of town for the weekend and Dr. G is still out of town, so she put her associate in charge of me.

Saturday, February 18, 2012 - Day 8
Jared went to the funeral home to make all of the arrangements for Michael.  They picked up his body that afternoon.  Dr. R's associate checked in on me.  Everything is going well.  He ordered a doppler for me so we could hear little Wyatt's heartbeat.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 - Day 9
I'm finished receiving antibiotics through IV and start taking the antibiotic pills.  I asked if the IV could be removed since it was no longer necessary, Dr. R's associate doesn't want to make a decision like that so he said no.  Since it had been 96 hours again, the IV is removed and IV #3 is put in.  I asked if I can at least have a shower.  He declines that request as well.  I cried.
My mom flew in and Jared brought her to the hospital.  Jared gave me a sponge bath and my mom washed my hair.  It's amazing how much better you feel when you're clean.  I'm never taking a shower for granted again.

Monday, February 20, 2012 - Day 10
Morning - Dr. G came in first thing and checked up on my progress.  He said as long as Dr. R was good with releasing me that I could go home.  Dr. R came in later that morning and did an u/s.  Wyatt was still looking great.  His sac measured 15.4 ml amniotic fluid and he had a strong heartbeat.  Dr. R ordered bloodwork and said as long as it came back good that I could go home that afternoon.

Afternoon - The results from the bloodwork came back clean.  Dr. Grady ordered me a wheelchair for home and Dr. G ordered me compression socks for home.  I'm given a prescription for 3 more days worth of antibiotics and anti nausea medicine {since one of the antibiotics makes me sick... it made me throw up 3x during my hospital stay}  The discharge paperwork is complete and I'm finally allowed to leave around 6 pm.

After 10 days in the hospital, I'm in no hurry to get back... however, the nurses were amazing and so nice to me, and I know that everything possible is being done to make sure Wyatt gets here safe and sound IN 20 WEEKS. :)

Hundreds of prayers were said on behalf of my family and I know God heard each and every one of them.  I know that God works in mysterious ways and I truly believe that He watched over us and showered blessings on us during our hospital stay.

Here are a few of the blessings that we have experienced.
Blessing #1 - Insurance approved 100% coverage of my stay
Blessing #2 - Michael stayed put until a perinatologist was involved and a plan was set to save Wyatt's life. {He's such a good brother}
Blessing #3 - I didn't go into labor
Blessing #4 - no infection was found in Wyatt's amniotic fluid
Blessing #5 - An amazing dr. was called in to do the cerclage.
Blessing #6 - The procedure was successful
Blessing #7 - The hospital staff
Blessing #8 - Wyatt is healthy and doing very well
Blessing #9 - My mom was able to fly out to spend a week with me.
Blessing #10 - my sister in law cleaned my entire house while we were in the hospital

There are a few others very special experiences but they are just a little to dear to my heart to share.

I really am blessed to have a family as amazing as mine.
During my entire hospital stay, Jared slept on the chair next to my bed.  He helped me get to the bathroom, he bathed me and washed my hair.  On days that I felt too yucky to eat, he fed me.  He rubbed my back 3x a day because it hurt so much from laying in a bed.  He rubbed my legs so I could get a break from the compression socks, and before I even came home on Monday, he had installed a new shower head with an extender and a shower chair so that I can take showers.... this man did absolutely everything I needed and more.  I'm the luckiest girl in the world to be able to call him mine.

My mom has been amazing. She washed my hair at the hospital Sunday night {which was seriously one of the best hair washings I've had in my life} and slept there so that Jared could go home and actually get a good nights rest.  We've only been at my house for 2 days now and she's already weeded my flowers, cleaned out my fridge freezer and my deep freezer, made a menu, shopped for the ingredients and has so far made 21 freezer meals and 9 loaves of bread.  And she's planning on cooking all day tomorrow as well.  This is a HUGE blessing since I am on strict bedrest and am not allowed to do any cooking or cleaning of any kind.  I get to have her here until Saturday and that day is already coming too soon.

I have learned a lot from this experience and I have grown a lot spiritually.  Jared and I have grown so much closer together.  Knowing that we have a son waiting for and watching over us has already inspired us to be the best we know how and knowing that we have another son depending on us inspires us to be as strong as we can be.  We look forward to bringing Wyatt home with us in 20 weeks, and we look forward to the day that we will get to meet our Michael.

You can read about Wyatt's birth story here
