freak

I received an email from Counsyl this morning informing me that the genetic screening has been completed and the results are available.  So I went online to get them and to see if Jared and/or I was a carrier of any 'mutant genes'.  The results...

"Jared Barney's DNA test shows that he is not a carrier of any disease-causing mutation tested."

I called and told this to Jared and his response? "Well sweetie, I AM a perfect speciman" haha okay, Jared whatever you say.  As for me...

"Jessica Barney's DNA test shows that she is a carrier of 

spinal muscular atrophy.

Huh?

How could this happen?  How can I be a carrier of something so awful?!

My initial response?  

I wanted to cry.

I felt like a freak.

Why are Jared's genes perfect and mine aren't?

Okay breathe.

Being a carrier of the gene doesn't mean that I will have children that suffer from spinal muscular atrophy.  The odds have just increased.  My odds are now 1/2800 instead of 1/4800.

The odds of us having a perfect baby are still really good.

So what next?

As soon as Jared and I finish this antibiotic that we are on, we'll go back to HRC for a followup on the genetic screening and all the fertility drugs will get ordered and I will start taking them as soon as they arrive.  

I'm really starting to get excited. :)
