Yesterday Wyatt turned 29 weeks gestation.
He should still be in my tummy... but instead, here he is. Looking at me with his piercing eyes and squeaking out little hiccups. He really is the image of perfection.
Wyatt is continuing to do well here in the NICCU. He's pretty much won over all the ladies with his cuteness. Nurses that have never even had him have heard of him and like to stop in just to take a look. {I'm in trouble, he can't even walk and already he's a ladies man.}
His skin is continuing to heal, but then new little raw areas will pop up that will have to be wrapped. The little thing that measures the amount of oxygen in his blood and gets his pulse was strapped to his upper thigh last week and when the nurse moved it, it peeled off a layer of skin with it. Then when she went to move it from his other thigh, it peeled that skin off too. It's a little frustrating that he's working so hard to heal his skin only to have it get damaged again, but I know the importance of tracking his vitals.
So last Monday I was talking about how they were going to do an echo to see if the PDA in his heart had closed so that they could potentially start on feedings. Well, it wasn't closed so his Dr. started him on some medicine that makes it close. He did the first set of three doses, had an echo yesterday morning and bad news bears, the PDA is still open. It's small, but it is definitely still open. I made friends with the guy that did the echo {which wasn't hard because he was super nice and very easy to talk to} and so he told me that in preemies, the PDA will open and then close and open again quite often. When he was finished I asked if Wyatt's was still open and he told me it was, that it was small, but for his size, it was probably medium, lol. Then he paused and was like, I'm actually not supposed to tell you what I see... so I smiled and said, I didn't hear anything! :)
Since the PDA is still open, they can do one more set of three doses of medicine. If the PDA hasn't closed after these next three doses, then he'll have to have surgery {boo} so the attending told me to give Wyatt a good talking to so that we could get it closed, haha. So he had dose number 4 yesterday and dose five today. If his labs show that his body is still tolerating the medicine tomorrow, they'll give the final dose and then do an echo the following day to see if that sucker is all closed up.
I really hope that thing closes. As soon as it's closed they can start talking about removing the UA line {the line through his umbilical cord} and then they'll get him started on feedings. Hopefully he'll be able to tolerate breastmilk!
Wyatt still has de-sats and brady's, but not nearly as bad as he did even just a few days ago {knock on wood}. I've got one strong little man! The respiratory therapist has even been decreasing the amount of oxygen going through his nasal cannula. Two days ago he was at 40% and today they've weened him down to 26%. He seems to be tolerating it and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he continues to.
My really exciting news for the day though?
I got to touch my little boy. I mean really touch him. Without gloves.
He feels like he needs a bath, haha.
But it was wonderful.
He was awake when I put my hand on the top of his head and as he held my finger he drifted off to sleep. I think I stood there just touching his skin for like 40 minutes...
He should be a pretty happy boy today because not only did he get to have some mommy time, he also has some new sheets.
The wound specialist told Jared and I that he would probably feel a lot more comfortable on satin pillowcases. The pillowcases that they have here are more rough feeling and probably don't feel good on his skin. So last night we went and bought 24 pillowcases. They change the pillowcase he lays on every 4 hours, so this way we have 3 days worth. I swear he feels like he's in heaven now. This little boy has just been snoozing away all day and I can see it in his sweet little face that he feels better. :)
Anything for my little man.

ReplyDeleteI've been following you from the July 2012 board. It sounds like Wyatt is a fighter! Stay strong mom and dad. Prayers are being sent to you all!!
ReplyDeleteI've been following you for a couple of weeks now. I am at 29 weeks today with twin boys too (after IVF as well). They are still cooking.
ReplyDeleteKnow that you and all of your family are in my prayers.
It's amazing how well he's doing. I love hearing your updates.
You are all so strong. I hope little Wyatt keeps making lots of improvements and that his PDA is closed at the next check so that he can avoid surgery. Best of luck to you all.
